Why Do Local Elections Matter?

Only 24% of us—just 14,987 people—cast a ballot in the 2021 Sandy Springs municipal election. Three out of every four registered voters stayed home.

That small group of voters chose the leaders who decide everything in our city: from whether a new apartment building gets approved,  how our roads are planned, new parks and public safety and how our tax dollars are spent.

This November, our community will hold municipal elections to choose the leaders who will make these critical decisions for the next four years. When you cast your ballot, you are helping to elect a mayor and six city councilmembers—one for each district. These are the people who set the policies and priorities for our city that shape the future of our neighborhoods.

From City Hall to Your Front Door

Local government isn't abstract. Its decisions have a direct and tangible impact on our daily lives. The leaders elected this fall will be responsible for:

  • Housing & Development: They oversee zoning, approve new construction and create the policies that determine the cost and availability of housing in our community.

  • Roads & Traffic: They are in charge of planning our roads, managing intersections and finding solutions for our city’s traffic flow.

  • Public Safety & Services: They set the budget for our police and fire departments, ensuring our first responders have the resources they need to keep us safe.

  • Parks & Recreation: They fund and manage our community spaces, from local parks and playgrounds to the events held at the City Green.

Your Vote Has Never Been More Critical

It’s easy to feel like a single vote doesn’t make a difference, but with such low turnout, the opposite is true. When so few people participate, every single vote carries more weight, and some local elections in our area have been decided by fewer than 35 votes.

When we don't participate, we let a small group of people choose the representatives for all of us. This is our home. We cannot afford to sit back and let someone else decide the future of our business growth, our streets and our community’s character.

Your vote is your voice. It is the most powerful tool you have to ensure our leaders reflect the values and priorities of everyone who calls Sandy Springs home.
